This page is the #1 match on a Google search for "tips on desinging a website". Yes, you have to misspell "designing" as "desinging". That's because Mr. Rhodes misspelled it as "desinging" in his prose below. We saw from a report on the visitor stats for this website that other people occasionally misspell the word when doing a Google or Yahoo search, and when they do, this page pops up first in the list of hits. This page is famous! (sort of) For the same reason, we're also the #17 Yahoo match for "child safty tips" [sic].

On my page of Website Design Tips, I used to list examples of poorly-designed sites to show you how NOT to design your site. There's a long tradition of how-to-design sites that do the same thing, such as WebpagesThatSuck.com, for example, whose motto is something like "Learning good design by looking at bad design."

When I started listing bad sites, I thought it would be unfair to critique a site without giving the webmaster a chance to fix it up first, so I gave them heads-up to let them know I was about to list it. In hindsight, this was a mistake: Can there ever be a polite way of telling someone that their site sucks? And is ever possible to do so without angering them?

Probably not, and I probably shouldn't have tried. Below is a veritable flood of hysterical email I got from a single webmaster who was incensed that someone pointed out how insane his site was.

When the webmaster, Anthony Rhodes, started insulting and threatening me, I went ahead and listed his site in the Poor Examples section, which further incensed him. But how harsh was my description of his site? Judge for yourself:

"PsychoCycles.org:  Incredibly, not only does this site violate just about every single guideline listed above, they're apparently proud of it: a diatribe on their site chastises users who write in to complain that they can't find anything."

That's the full extent of what I published -- nothing more.

Since Mr. Rhodes redesigned his site you're no longer able to check out the things that caused me to list it way back when -- such as:

• It was too wide to view on even a 21" monitor, requiring horizontal scrolling.
• It was filled with a gazillion superfluous animated GIFs.
• There was mystery navigation with links like "page 1", "page 2", etc.
• There wasn't even a clue as to what the site was even supposed to be about.
• And there were misspellings every other word.

Several months after this all started, Mr. Rhodes redesigned his site and so I removed the above critique. But he still sends me hate mail anyway.

Even after his redesigns, his front page has actually bragged about the misspellings, as well as offering abuse to people who visit the site: "This WEB PAGE will be closeing at the end of this Year   WHY? BECUSE OF YOU   Think About it and dont bitch when we go we been asking for your suport for years." [see his current site]

I include Mr. Rhodes' emails below because they're amusing, bizarre, and incredibly ironic: he complains that I "can't let things go" (um, who's the one sending the other email for three years now?), that I'm "rude" (um, who's the one calling the other a "fucking joke", "small minded boring petty ordenary fuck head", etc.?) and that I'm "forcing my views on others" (um, who's the one demanding that the other person remove content from their site?).

Before I present Mr. Rhodes' email in their entirety, this summary will help put things into perspective:

Perhaps the most troubling thing about Mr. Rhodes' statements is that he cannot differentiate between someone expressing their views and forcing their views -- to him it's apparently the same thing. In reality I simply published something on a website, once, which readers are free to accept or reject as they see fit. If that constitutes "forcing" my views on others then I'm in good company with several billion other web pages, millions of books, and hundreds of newspapers. Indeed, if anyone's "forcing their views" on others it's Mr. Rhodes, who has hurled a ton of hysterical hate mail at me for over three years now, directly to my in box, whether I want it or not.

Naturally, given the level of abuse he's hurled at me, I've declined to consider his demands or even reply to his missives, but they still keep coming anyway. Enjoy.

The only possible opening for a statement of this kind is that I detest writing. The process itself epitomizes the European concept of "legitimate" thinking; what is written has an importance that is denied the spoken. I saw the note on your site about how you'd have to take the site down soon because you can't afford the webhosting fees. So I'd like to offer to host your domain on my own server without charge. You'd still have the psychocycles.org address, and would control the content of your site, just like with Yahoo.

Please do not think that by my making this offer that I am willing to engage in any sort of discussion about the various demands / insults / threats you have directed towards me over the last year. Naturally, if you send me any more abuse I will rescind my offer.
